Smart Cities

Smart Cities are hot! The US DoT just concluded it's Smart Cities Challenge, where seven finalist cities were being considered. The DoT will spend $40 million, topped up by $10 million from Vulcan Ventures, and $90 million in funding directly from the city. The DoT noted that all finalist cities are likely to move forward on their own, so a push can also be expected in San Francisco, Denver, Austin, Pittsburgh, Kansas City MO, and Portland.

So what are the innovations we can expect to see develop?

  • New mobility concepts
  • Ride sharing, car sharing, ownership models
  • Public transit innovation
  • Smart infrastructure for traffic management
  • Autonomous transport, dedicated corridors for autonomy
  • Increased electrification
  • V2V communication
  • Big data and analytics
  • Last mile solutions

Our AC meeting will mimic the focus areas of the DoT Challenge, but we'll talk about it also from the perspective of the existing automotive industry, and Silicon Valley-type technology vendors. It's going to take a lot of partnerships and mutually beneficial inventions to make the smart city a success. Join 100+ Autotech Council members, OEMs, vendors, startups and VCs at our Smart Cities meeting to meet others working towards these goals.
