Autonomous cars are no longer hypothetical! They are already sharing the road with you every day, even if you're not riding in one yourself. Since we last discussed Autonomy in 2016, Self-Driving has become cutting edge with driverless shuttles already running campus routes and on public streets (near us in San Ramon), and predictions of self-driving taxis (NuTonomy in Singapore this year), through to fully integrated vehicles on public highways (Nvidia by 2022). But we've also seen the dangers associated with self-driving cars, with the tragic death of Elaine Herzberg who was hit by an autonomous Uber in March.

Capabilities for self-driving are improving exponentially. One key reason for rapid progress is that multiple trends from OUTSIDE the automotive industry are now playing a large role in advancing self-driving. Contributing trends include:

  • 5G, low-latency mobile networks
  • In-car network improvements
  • Machine Vision
  • AI, Machine Learning, and Fleet Learning
  • Cloud Computing with Edge Computing
  • Smart Cities and Open Data
  • GIS systems and HD Maps
  • …oh, and Moore's Law, Kryder's Law, and Nielsen's Law

To address this, we bring together the Autotech Council community and Telecom Council's IoT Forum and ComTech—all of whom are interested and invested in the future of the Connected and Autonomous Car, and we'll discuss:

  • The differences between Autonomous Cars (Levels 1-5) and Self-Driving (Levels 4-5)
  • Safety issues, and on-road testing regulations and compliance, re: the Uber case
  • How is Autonomous AI improving? Learning?
  • How much infrastructural change will be required?
  • How does connectivity affect the SDC and the Infotainment experience of the passengers?

Expect the conversations to be wide-ranging as the technology promises to fundamentally change the jobs of drivers, the culture around community and personal mobility, sales, ownership, vehicle sharing, urban planning, energy and the environment.

This ½-day, executive-format meeting highlights vendors who are leading the segment forward and brings dozens of undiscovered companies to the stage as well. As always, we include plenty of time for networking, business discussions, and an interactive format that promotes relationships between member and non-member companies.
